This is my thought for today or at least my irritation for today! Mind you if this is all I have to irk me then have a pretty good life!
When I had a huge 'old fashioned' TV with a back on it that was so huge it may very well have been the the bow of the titanic in a previous life I presses the on button an had a satisfying click and a weird electrical ping as the screen lit up and the TV was on - 1 millisecond and no hanging about.
Now that I have apparently 'upgraded' to a TV that is thinner than an after eight mint it is a different story. I press the on button on the remote and nothing, no sounds, no pings and no indications that remote control is actually working. This is were my problem begins. I re-point the remote while muttering 'come on you blood thing), sometimes this is replayed a few times, sometimes I brandish the remote with murderous jabbing action in the hope that it will speed up the switching on. If I am lucky after what seems like about ten minutes the lazy bastard eventually switches on with an attitude that would make a sulky teenager proud! You really would think that a modern TV would be faster! WTF!!
Has anyone else notice this or am I alone in my techno-gripe!

No you are not the only one!
oh yes, ours is the same, but it also comes in through a freeview box, which makes it even slower, as you have to put the freeview box on first, otherwise the TV comes on, as you say, after 10 minutes, but you cant see anything and the freeview box takes another 10 minutes. aaaaaaaargh.
No you're not the only one Annie, ours takes an age to boot up! Then the free view decides to come on when it feels like it....I hate technology! It was lovely to see you both at the weekend.

PS Pug Daddy sends his love
Ours does need a bit of "warm up time" too. You could try going to get a drink, while it gets on with it? It would save you a bit of stress and help your blood-pressure!
X
Ours is the same so its no good switching on a programme dead on the time might, miss the beginning. It reminds me of my parents first tv back in the olden days (60s) when they all did this. So now I say to DH I'll go and warm up the tv shall I.
We have to switch on the freeview box first otherwise we get a no signal message
You are dead right Annie. While we are on the subject of technology, why does take so long for a digital camera to decide it is ready to take a photo, the bunnies have long gone by then! My washer has just finished after one hour and 57 minutes, I thought they were supposed to be 'eco', what is economic about that?! I think I had better go and lie down in a darkened room before I get too stressed!!!
Cant say I have a problem. I had a plasma once, absolute crap, never again. Now I have a "normal" slim one and so far no problems. x
Annie, when I grew up, all the televisions had tubes & it would take a much longer time for them to warm up before you got that picture. So I guess we are in going backwards!
Ha you're right. I'm the same keep pressing the remote. Still beats the old black and white ones in a teak case with those long massive buttons.
You are not alone in your pain LOL!!! Our out of the ark tv gave up the ghost just before christmas so we have now got a nice new swanky thin all singing all dancing one. Takes forever to come on and also so slow to change channel too - our old one I could whizz up and down the channels but this one has to have a pause before it will change.
I must admit though that I love having the sky plus now - no more fiddling about trying to load up videos and only being able to record one channel at a time.
Laughing myself stupid whilst reading this. I SO know what you mean! Also, why is there no flipping completely off button? To extinguish every last bit of power you have to turn all of ours off at the socket or there is an irritating and probably some cost inducing red light! Seems like we have gone backwards in some ways. As for my husbands stupid surround sound system. If you want to turn it down it has an annoying habit of switching functions and leaving you cursing and trying to remember what the hell you do to make it go back to where you were. Rant over!
Oh Annie, im so with you on this. I hate modern technology to and if i could still have my old one i would. I bought a little 19 inch one for my frontroom as i hate TV's but it wouldn't switch on properly or would take ages to come and would flash on and off driving you nuts. Then my partner took it back and came home with a 22 inch one and then the blasted dvd player that was attached inside it wouldn't play. I said i would never have a large one and i now have a 30 inch which isnt huge but its big enough. Give me my vintage radio any day its never off. ;-)) dee xx
Oh my fuc&*r does the same! I press the power button for ages the red light flashes about 7 or 8 times before it comes on, just press and don't bloody stop till you get a picture. If that don't work just throw a shoe at it, your telly won't come on but you will feel a bit better.

I have a lovely TV that switches on quickly...no problem however I then have to remember to switch on...with a second changer...the cable box thingy and choose a channel. I then have a third changer thingy for DVD's....arrrggghhh. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be how it all works or it's just the way the DH has set it up. It is quite frustrating doing all this and I frequently miss the first couple of minutes of a show as I figure out which is the right changer to use:(
ours is the same, especially since our cable company changed their digital boxes and supposedly made things faster - I laugh because it's made our television even slower to turn on and slow to change channels - drives me nuts.
I've been lucky that my TV comes on quickly, only problem it's now broken after only two years. My second one in 5 years, blooming annoying, thankfully it's insured this time. I had my old chunky TV for about 10 years without a problem...
I liked the Vintage Gardeners comment. Did a 60 degree wash the other day in my new washing machine and it took over three (3)blooming hours to complete, and the towels didn't even look any better.
Anyway, deep breath!!!

That is me completely! I had to laugh.:) My other half has installed an up to the minute, wafer thin, HD 3D AV Sky+++++ monster in the sitting room and unless he is controlling it (which he insists upon and is admirably good at) I find it easier to just watch the portable in my craft room as I don't have so many decisions to make that invariably go wrong and I end up turning it off in disgust. Would love to throw something at it but I probably wouldn't survive long myself if I did. lol!
Ha, we have a trusty ancient telly. Doesn't get turned on much - we're preserving it!

Now I've stopped laughing I have to agree! I have a new LED TV in my work room and switching on isn't the only thing it does slowly when you change channels the screen goes black with just the channel no in the corner and then eventually changes channel, when I say eventually it is probably only a few seconds but feels like a MONTH!!
Hi Annie, sorry to hear that you and others have problems with your TV's. We have just upgraded to a Plasma from ancient technology and there isn't a delay when turning it on. We watch everything through a Sky Box as the TV reception here is awful - maybe this helps. I will have to ask my electronic engineer husband if there is any way to improve the warm up time for you. Best wishes, Pj x
This is so funny Annie...I am lead to believe I am the only person who can't turn on a hi-tech modern tv...thank you for this post..I will share it with my loved ones!

He he he you make me laugh. I too brandish the remote about hoping it might make some difference.
Thank you so much for my bag handles. I received them, I put them on my workdesk and am now trying to find ways of using them. Thanks xxx
Modern TVs should turn on immediately, apparently if you hold down the ON button on our remote it turns on even quicker. Sky boxes & Freeview boxes will take time to boot up if you switch them off at the wall socket as each time the electricity is cut off they lose all of the programming and have to tune into all of the channels again and this takes time as there are a lot of channels nowadays. I know that the boxes consume power when left on stand-by, but that is the only way to have instant viewing through them. I hope this helps, Pj x
I've just 'updated' as well, as my kids were laughing at my poor old tv, "it hasn't even got a scart lead socket" they'd say!! Well, I have to admit I prefer the sound as well as the speed of starting up of my old TV!!! Have to agree with you Annie......
Ours is still the old fashioned big at the back version and unfortunately it was built to last, we wish it dead and long for an after eight slim version but it just goes on for ever and ever.
You're not the only one - I have a very ancient telly that switches on, ping, just like that (and you know it too, because the volume has gone haywire and it's really loud when it switches on!), my partner has a huge thin screen and I never know whether I've actually switched it on or whether the batteries in the remote aren't working...
No, I totally understand. I STILL have a big (as it it is not slim, it has a big bottom! It is one of the tiny screens) portable TV and it is analogue- I fully intend to rebel against digital till the end. I know exactly what it's going to do, it's very easy and I dread the time when I must come over to the dark side!
Well we are being switched over on the 8th of Feb in our neck of the woods so none of the bl-----y tv's upstairs will work at all. Methinks it is all a ruse by hubby to make me go and sit in the lounge of an evening and watch tv with him instead of crafting upstairs!!! Hugs Mrs A.
I'm feeling your pain with this one. I have to press the button on my remote twice in quick successsion to turn my wafffer thin tv on. Then it idles into life in a desultory fashion. If I'm not sure if it's heard the two clicks, I can go through a comedy sketch of turning the tv on and off repeatedly, without realising it, all the while the screen stays blank. Fun times. xxx
I totally agree with you, they do and its so annoying! So does a Virgin Media box ugh! XxxX http://thesecondhandrose.blogspot.com/
